Bright, restful and full of character, Woodyear House is an impressive Grade II listed home set right in the heart of Cowes. Backed by the tranquil waters of the town’s harbour and located amongst the thriving independent retailers of the High Street, it’s a great option for those looking to get an authentic taste of Island life.
Over a hundred years ago, this imposing building was home to the Woodyear family of drapers - who supplied their top-notch linen to Queen Victoria at Osborne House. Restored and revived in 2015, it now provides truly unforgettable getaways with its simple, nautical-inspired interiors, comfy beds and sunny harbourside patio - ideal for watching the boats gliding in and out of harbour.
Once known as The Old Haberdashery, it still retains much of its 19th-century character and charm, including the original grand staircase with its stunning ironwork balustrades - something you can’t fail to miss when stepping in through the front door for the first time. On the first floor, guests will discover a spacious, open-plan living area with impressive views over Cowes Harbour, as well as a shipshape kitchen/dining area next door and a well-placed waterfront balcony (where we expect you’ll be spending a lot of your time). Up on the second floor there are two bright and airy double ensuite bedrooms, whilst down on the ground floor you’ll find the super king master bedroom and a tasteful double plus two further bathrooms.
Also at ground level, is the harbourside patio, loved by our guests for secluded dinners, intimate family gatherings and lazy afternoons in the sun.
Renowned across the world as a centre of sailing and shipbuilding, Cowes is a characterful and historic town with an identity all of its own. Locals are especially proud of the winding High Street, home to a thriving selection of independent retailers - including a 200-year-old chandlery, an artisan fudge maker, tasteful interior shops and an array of sophisticated restaurants.
Venturing away from the centre you can find the impressive Northwood House - a Georgian manor built in 1799. Surrounded by tranquil parkland, it plays host to many local events, such as The Wight Proms, The Wight Bite and the The Isle of Wight Literary Festival which takes place every October. Meanwhile, taking the chain ferry across the River Medina, the town of East Cowes is home to Queen Victoria’s stately Italian-inspired home - Osborne House - a must-visit for any Isle of Wight holiday.
